After a CBS News program on Yamaha Rhino ATV deaths and injuries, Tyler Chase contacted CBS Channel 5, a Phoenix, Arizona station.
In November of 2005, Tyler Chase, Jennifer Chase, his wife, and their two-year-old son were in a Yamaha Rhino accident that claimed his wife’s life.
Tyler told CBS Channel 5 that Jennifer was driving the Yamaha Rhino on an asphalt road. When she made a left turn, the Yamaha Rhino flipped over. Jennifer hit her head on the roll bar and died.
“It was just overwhelming,” Tyler told CBS Channel 5. He was also seriously injured in the wreck. “I had lost a person that I loved.”
What drove him to contact CBS News was Yamaha’s statement to CBS that the Rhino is a “safe, reliable and versatile vehicle” and that the hundreds of Rhino rollover injuries and deaths were most likely caused by driver mistakes or carelessness.
Tyler Chase told CBS News that he disagrees with Yamaha’s assessment (as do we) and stated,
“For Yamaha, I think they need to improve the vehicle. I think they need to make it safer. Whatever they need to do to make it safer.”
Pritzker Olsen attorney Eric Hageman is on a federal panel overseeing Yamaha Rhino lawsuits. He represents dozens of people injured in Yamaha Rhino rollover accidents. He had this to say about Yamaha Rhino rollovers:
“While Yamaha has acknowledged the inherent danger of the Rhino by suspending sales until certain repairs are made, those repairs don’t go far enough and there are still countless thousands of Rhinos out there that have the capacity to cause very serious injuries or death to Rhino passengers or drivers. The Rhino is incredibly dangerous, even at low speeds and on flat terrain, because of inherent flaws in its design, including having a narrow track width, high platform, high center of gravity, wheels too small to maintain stability, and top-heavy design. No repairs can fix all of those problems. Simply put, the only way to protect people from this product is to remove it from the market.”
